ALUMNI NEWS: Former Ironman, Taylor Brooks has had a great few games with the LeMoyne Dolphins!  He was named as a Northeast-10 Freshman of the week [the first LeMoyne player to earn that honor], mentioned in Inside Lacrosse, Lacrosse Magazine, and even on the local news report! The Dolphins are currently undefeated in conference play.

Michael Mann is also doing well, being named a team captain for Sam Houston State, and currently ranked 3rd in the MCLA Division II for total points.

Great job this weekend at the tournament!  Although the JV went 1-2 on the weekend, their two losses were to Division I JV teams.  They played competitively against tough competition, losing their third game in double overtime to Strake Jesuit.  Varsity had a great weekend with three straight wins advancing to the championship game which we’ll just say was…eventful.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Alford family and Strake Jesuit on the loss of Charles.

There will be no practice on Monday, but practice will resume on Tuesday-Thursday in preparation for Friday’s home game against Ft. Bend.  We will be wearing WHITE uniforms for the game on Friday.  Remember, we need lots of help to make a successful home game:  field set-up, field tear-down, penalty timers, & game clock.  If the printing company delivers on time, we should have our annual season program available at this Friday’s home game!!  Thanks to Doug Humphries and Denise Mann for the many hours of work getting this together.  It is going to be really nice.

Late Goal Lifts Cy-Fair Past Bellaire in Thriller, 6-5

Junior middie Jay Bowling scored the game-winning goal with 54 seconds remaining to give Cy-Fair a thrilling 6-5 victory over Bellaire in a Texas High School Lacrosse League South District Division II game Thursday night.

Coming out of a timeout, Bowling fired home the go-ahead goal with a low shot to the left corner from about eight yards to put the Ironmen in front after Bellaire had erased a two-goal, fourth-quarter deficit to draw even.

Following Bowling’s only goal of the night, Cy-Fair won the ensuing face-off before Bellaire forced a turnover. Bellaire had one final chance to send the game into overtime, but senior attackman Calvin Kaczmarick shot wide with 20 seconds remaining, and Cy-Fair got to the end line first to regain possession.

The Ironmen successfully cleared the ball out of their defensive end and ran out the clock.

“It was a close game,” Cy-Fair head coach Tim Glass said. “A lot of defense was played. We had a lot of possession and some bad shots that couldn’t find the cage. They hit a lot of pipes and had a lot of off-cage shots. If we were all dialed in, there would have been a lot more goals and the game still would have been close.”

Sophomore middie Steve Hartshorn scored a game-high three goals, and Bowling finished with two points on a goal and an assist for Cy-Fair (2-0), which won its second straight. Junior attackmen Brennan Wolcott and Austin Adams also scored single goals for the Ironmen.

Also playing a key role, Cy-Fair junior middie Donny Meyer won 11-of-15 face-offs and picked up nine ground balls.

Cy-Fair wins season opener against Katy

Junior middie-attackman Jay Bowling registered a game-high six points on four goals and two assists to lead Cy-Fair to a 17-2 victory over Katy.

In both teams’ season opener, junior attackman Brennan Wolcott, sophomore attackman-middie Steve Hartshorn, junior middie Justin Lundquist and sophomore attackman Matthew Mann all added four points for the Ironmen (1-0).

Wolcott and Hartshorn each scored four goals, and Lundquist and Mann both had two goals and two assists.

On Wednesday, we will be having team PICTURE DAY.  We will be taking both individual and team photo's (JV, Varsity, and all).  We are going to try something different this year for the individual photo's instead of the same old kneeling in front of the goal picture.  Individual pictures can be taken in either Red or White uniform, however the TEAM PICTURE WILL BE TAKEN IN THE RED UNIFORM!!  Please make sure not to miss out on being in the team picture and don't be the only knucklehead to show up with only your white uniform!

Click HERE for the order form to order pictures.  Please have it completed and attach payment to bring on Wednesday.  Checks should be made out to Cy-Fair Ironmen.  We will be set up to begin taking individual pictures at 3:30 for those who can arrive early.  For those players who have brothers or sisters playing lacrosse, we would be glad to take a picture of you together (come on...do it for mom & dad).

Congratulations to our alumni who won for the first time in a long time! The alumni trumped the varsity 12 - 8, thanks in large part to the 16 alumni that showed up [is that a record?] and to Nathan Tabb who had half of the alumni's goals. It was good to see some of last year's state team return as well as some guys who graduated in the mid 90's, and the alumni in between.  Check out the photos here.

Also - FYI - A tournament has been added for the JV on February 23 at Kingwood. Details will follow.

    HAPPY NEW YEAR!

The coaches want to make sure everyone brings a pair of running shoes to practice because the will be doing quite a bit of running and running in cleats promotes shin-splints.  Players you know what that means.....better start running those extra Christmas cookies off this week before practice resumes!

The Alumni game is still on for this Saturday at Goodson at 3pm.  This is primarily a Varsity game, however, JV players should attend and bring your gear in case we need extra players.  We will be wearing our RED uniform for the Alumni game (so the alumni blood won't show as much on the uniform:)

Calling all Ironmen Alumni,

The current Ironmen would like to issue a challenge to all you old, washed-up lacrosse has-beens to the annual Alumni lacrosse game on January 5th at Goodson Stadium beginning at 3pm (just after your nap-time).  Dust off those helmets, re-string your rotted sticks, and fit those mouthpieces to your new dentures.  Bring your own Ben-Gay.  Our current Ironmen are gonna show you how lacrosse is supposed to be played!

Please RSVP so we can have enough ambulances on stand-by for you.  If your a little nervous about facing these giants, we've set up a hotline at:  1-800-Im-2-scared-2-play.  Psychologists are standing by.

Come show us what you got left (if anything).

Sincerely,

The Ironmen

Summer Camps are already sending out information!  here is a note from the coach at Denver University [It's a beautiful campus and not as cold in the winter as you might think!]:

I hope all is well down South. Things up here is Denver are going great, we are really excited about the upcoming season and think this could be our best squad ever. We have our highest number of Texas boys on the roster this year and we realize how important getting the best players in the state is to our program. We also realize how important it is for us to continue to help develop lacrosse in the west to be the best in the country. We are truly committed to showing kids and coaches our system of fundamentals and what we think kids need to do to be successful at the next level.

This is why we want to make sure your guys know about our camps for the 2008 Summer and that our registrations are now open, these camps will fill up quickly and I can honestly say these are some of the best teaching camps in the country. Here is our link www.lacrossecamps.com  Also I am very happy to say we are going to be playing our first game in Texas this year in Dallas against The Cornell Big Red and we would love to see you there on March 18th.

All the Best, Jon Torpey; Associate Head Lacrosse Coach; The University of Denver

GO IRONMEN!!

October 21, 2007

Every year in October the THSLL holds an annual meeting to look at proposed rule changes.  Each team from around the state, both DI and DII, are allowed to vote in this process.

Saturday, October 20 the annual meeting was held in Friendswood.  There were several issues voted on, but one of which that will have a significant impact on the Ironmen.  We had been watching this proposed rule closely and had been providing statistical information to the state commissioners on the negative impact it would have on our program.  The rule states that any DI team must have 100% of it's players coming from a single high school, and any DII team must have 50% of it's players coming from a single high school in order to be eligible for the State Championship.  Unfortunately, there are only 2 other lacrosse programs in the state that draw it's players from multiple high schools as we do.  The rule change passed overwhelmingly and goes into effect this season.

How does this impact the Ironmen?  First of all, we could continue playing in Division II as we have in the past, but the farthest we could advance is the South District Championship.  We could move up to Division I, but we wouldn't be eligible to advance beyond the South District Championship in that division either. It basically eliminates us from advancing to the State Championship.  Since we draw from several high schools, we don't have any one school that has 50% of our roster.

In order to be eligible for a shot at the Division II State Championship this season, we are going to request a waiver from the THSLL Commissioners.  If we are not granted the waiver, we could still play the regular season games, but we would not be considered eligible for the State Championship playoffs.  Another option would be to recruit 5 more Cy-Woods players before regular season starts in February.  As part of the waiver request, there will have to be a plan for how we will meet this new rule in the future.  I have gotten the Iron Eagles roster and looked at the current 8th grade players who will be projected freshman Ironmen next year to get an idea of our team composition for the 2008-2009 season.   Our projected roster will meet the new criteria with exactly 50% of the players coming from Cy-Woods.

This will have a significant impact on the future of our team, but by working together we will be able to develop a plan to meet this new challenge.

For the Board,

Richard Mann
